Fuck it, I feel like bragging about a (relative) win.

I don't talk about it much on here, but I'm an active swing/momentum trader so I keep track of the stock market and individual sectors on a daily basis. I exited out of a long position that acted as my anchor for a long time (I was 80% $SPLG at one point) in February when the S&P index dropped below its 100-day EMA (Exponential Moving Average). There have been a few relief rallies and fake-outs that I didn't believe in, so I stayed out of US stocks; the past six or seven weeks have felt like a slow-mo version of the 2020 COVID crash to me. So I've mostly rotated into international large cap value/dividend plays, a US Bond market index, and, god help me, physical hold shares, because that's how bleak it's been looking out there.

Anyway, after some not so great ~news~ yesterday, the market shit the bed today. Looks like the Dow ended 3.98% in the red, SPY is down 4.93%, NASDAQ dropped 5.3%. Meanwhile I eked out a gain of 0.01%. Basically feeling like this guy right now:

so i have thoughts about Shadowbringers 5.3. I'm rotating it in my mind, thinking about the context it gives, and speculating on where the story might go in Endwalker.

this is under a readmore because, obviously, spoilers.

Specifically, the crystals you get during this quest.

It's never stated as such, but I like to think that these are the archaic form of soul crystals. Stones holding the memories of those who passed before, that might be used to teach the next to fill that role.

Which is, basically, the idea behind every single job stone save machinist. (Because its a new class and the WoL is the first one to use that job stone.) You get new skills because you can attune to it better and can "remember" how to do more skills.

However, you gain the skills and techniques of those who came before you, but there's a distance to them. Like with the Echo - you gets glimpses into people's pasts, from their perspective. You can even get emotions from those memories, as evidenced by Fordola - but they're not your memories.

Which brings me to my next point:

It is all but outright stated that this crystal was yours, pre-sundering. It's been thousands of years, so you've reincarnated, but given the way Hythlodaeus talks about your past self, your innate nature persists.

So, I imagine that like. When you use that crystal - whether you choose to believe your WoL got the whole shebang or just flashes of the important bits - the memories do not have that distance. You know that you never did any of that in this life, but you still think the same way, so the memories feel exactly like your own memories.

It's also implied that the one responsible for making your crystal in secret, was Emet Selch. Which is why he is equal parts friendly, disappointed, pissed off, and annoyed.

This moment of symbolism is something unique to my own playthrough, and I brought this up back in 5.0, but I thought it was kind of interesting how my own outfit choices echoed his own. Black military garb with gold paldrons and red accents. Even down to the length and the same strip of red down the back. His is an outfit of political office, while Alyssa's is that of a frontline combatant, but there's a shared aesthetic.

(And, before anyone says he's wearing those colors because they're the colors of the Garlean Empire.... he made that empire. He's the one who chose those colors.)

Which just adds an extra bit of flavor once you have the context of who you were.

Imagine your bestie reincarnates. And she doesnt remember you, but she still acts the same, and even has the same taste... but also she's against everything you stand for, and she has a bunch of new friends who think you're an asshole.

Is it any fucking wonder he acts like that.

Also, like. Obviously, the WoL is against the rejoining, because slaughtering whole worlds is really bad, actually. But depending on how much you get from the crystal - at this point, at least, it's up to the player's interpretation - you can probably empathize with the 3 unsundered ascians, even if you don't agree with their goals and think their methods are monstrous. Because having those memories means you can remember what having an unsundered soul actually felt like.

So even if you would never agree with them because the cost is too high, and you don't share Emet Selch's "moral relativism" because those other people are people and their lives matter, jackass, you can now remember what it felt like, when you held the title of Azem. And you cant help but feel slightly emptier.

In terms of game mechanics, it's like, say, living a life without an MP bar. Then remembering what it felt like to cast magic. From then on you cannot help but know that it's not that you don't have an MP bar, but that it's been permanently set at 0 your whole life.

If you've never had something, you don't realize that its gone. But now you do, and no one else in the entire world can relate!! Alisaie even says as much at one point - she's only ever had a "sundered" soul, so she can't understand the Ascians' perspective.

The only other people who you might've talked to about that are dead because you, personally, drove a sword through them. Because they wanted to commit genocide, and someone had to stop them.

This is in its own section because it's unrelated, but my speculation re: Endwalker plot beats is related to Elidibus and Zenos. Specifically, Elidibus was Zodiark's heart, but stopped because he was needed in his role as the Emissary. Which implies that Zodiark, at the moment, no longer has a heart.

And Zenos?

Zenos has a history of taking over primals and using them himself.

3: What’s a fic idea that you have but haven’t written yet?

oh i have SO MANY loose fic ideas (curse of an active imagination). i will say that the current one i've been rotating in my head is a ffxiv fic that details an incident mentioned in 5.3. specifically, that time the crystal exarch apparently used a salmon fillet as a letter opener. i think it'd be a fun little scene to write, maybe use it as a character study for lyna and the exarch's relationship, maybe use it as an excuse to write some family fluff, something like that.

alternately: i sort of came up with an au with a friend or two, where alphinaud and alisaie (from ffxiv) somehow ended up in daybreak town (kh) and got dragged into all that politics with the unions and all the tension and such. the two of them would absolutely not vibe with the unions i think, ahaha, and since that au would have them be from either post-5.0 or post-5.3 (the shadowbringers character development it important), they'd not take too kindly to the insistence over being rid of all darkness. especially considering they'd Just seen the damage that Only Light can do, over in norvrandt. it'd probably be a bigger fic but i do want to write it some day, it'd be fun

OH MY FRIEND it is SUCH a good dynamic

story time

so, to start off with, how i ended up shipping it in the first place. i have been on a JOURNEY of who to ship my wol rowan with. i started with thancred bc he's squall leonhart coded, but eventually i was pulled over to shipping rowan with g'raha instead. i cannot say no to that catboy, haha. then i made a joke about rowan and estinien having had a fling bc they're the two chosen dragoons of their generation, and then the "good you're alone" bit happened in EW and it was no longer a joke, lmao

but for rowan...he's been a dragoon for basically all of MSQ. he's known estinien since those ARR days, and there's just an inherent eroticism of being the two azure dragoons of a single generation, if that makes sense? estinien and a DRG wol just understand a lot about each other given that they can have very similar backgrounds, and he and rowan just mesh well together. they understand what each other has gone through, haha

and g'raha and rowan is fairly straightforward for most g'raha/wol relationships, though they didn't get together until after 5.3. rowan knew full well who the exarch was (he has a perfect memory so knew the voice, but wasnt sure if he was dealing with an amnesiac) and after 5.0 he had some personal stuff to sort through (he lost his closest confidant outside of estinien, emotional trauma, etc).

and estinien has to come around to the idea of sharing, and g'raha has to adjust his expectations about who estinien is as a person, but they're able to find an equilibrium, if that makes sense? in its most stripped down dynamic, they are this:

rowan/wol is the glue that holds them together. a loving presence who is accepting and basically is just "home".

estinien is the quiet understanding, and the "protector" even though all three are capable of protecting themselves

g'raha is the willingness to push boundaries, the one who helps start a lot of self-reflection and personal growth. also the boundless energy and excitement, haha, poor guy is finally able to go on adventures the way he wants

BUT if you want to know more about the rowan-specific dynamic!!!!! i have a big ol fanfic about them!!!!!! you can read it here!!!!!! i havent updated this one specifically in far too long, but i've been writing other little drabbles in this series to flesh out some of rowan's other relationships. the next big update will be the 5.3 stuff for the rowan/g'raha side of things, and then after that is the ot3 FINALLY becoming the ot3, i am SO EXCITED

Webb exposes complex atmosphere of starless super-Jupiter

An international team of researchers has discovered that previously observed variations in brightness of a free-floating planetary-mass object known as SIMP 0136 must be the result of a complex combination of atmospheric factors, and cannot be explained by clouds alone.

Using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to monitor a broad spectrum of infrared light emitted over two full rotation periods by SIMP 0136, the team was able to detect variations in cloud layers, temperature, and carbon chemistry that were previously hidden from view.

The results provide crucial insight into the three-dimensional complexity of gas giant atmospheres within and beyond our solar system. Detailed characterization of objects like these is essential preparation for direct imaging of exoplanets, planets outside our solar system, with NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.

Rapidly rotating, free-floating

SIMP 0136 is a rapidly rotating, free-floating object roughly 13 times the mass of Jupiter, located in the Milky Way just 20 light-years from Earth. Although it is not classified as a gas giant exoplanet—it doesn't orbit a star and may instead be a brown dwarf—SIMP 0136 is an ideal target for exo-meteorology: It is the brightest object of its kind in the northern sky. Because it is isolated, it can be observed with no fear of light contamination or variability caused by a host star. And its short rotation period of just 2.4 hours makes it possible to survey very efficiently.

Prior to the Webb observations, SIMP 0136 had been studied extensively using ground-based observatories and NASA's Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes.

"We already knew that it varies in brightness, and we were confident that there are patchy cloud layers that rotate in and out of view and evolve over time," explained Allison McCarthy, doctoral student at Boston University and lead author on a study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. "We also thought there could be temperature variations, chemical reactions, and possibly some effects of auroral activity affecting the brightness, but we weren't sure."

To figure it out, the team needed Webb's ability to measure very precise changes in brightness over a broad range of wavelengths.

Charting thousands of infrared rainbows

Using NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph), Webb captured thousands of individual 0.6- to 5.3-micron spectra—one every 1.8 seconds over more than three hours as the object completed one full rotation. This was immediately followed by an observation with MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), which collected hundreds of spectroscopic measurements of 5- to 14-micron light—one every 19.2 seconds, over another rotation.

The result was hundreds of detailed light curves, each showing the change in brightness of a very precise wavelength (color) as different sides of the object rotated into view.

"To see the full spectrum of this object change over the course of minutes was incredible," said principal investigator Johanna Vos, from Trinity College Dublin. "Until now, we only had a little slice of the near-infrared spectrum from Hubble, and a few brightness measurements from Spitzer."

The team noticed almost immediately that there were several distinct light-curve shapes. At any given time, some wavelengths were growing brighter, while others were becoming dimmer or not changing much at all. A number of different factors must affect the brightness variations.

"Imagine watching Earth from far away. If you were to look at each color separately, you would see different patterns that tell you something about its surface and atmosphere, even if you couldn't make out the individual features," explained co-author Philip Muirhead, also from Boston University. "Blue would increase as oceans rotate into view. Changes in brown and green would tell you something about soil and vegetation."

Patchy clouds, hot spots, and carbon chemistry

To figure out what could be causing the variability on SIMP 0136, the team used atmospheric models to show where in the atmosphere each wavelength of light was originating.

"Different wavelengths provide information about different depths in the atmosphere," explained McCarthy. "We started to realize that the wavelengths that had the most similar light-curve shapes also probed the same depths, which reinforced this idea that they must be caused by the same mechanism."

One group of wavelengths, for example, originates deep in the atmosphere where there could be patchy clouds made of iron particles. A second group comes from higher clouds thought to be made of tiny grains of silicate minerals. The variations in both of these light curves are related to patchiness of the cloud layers.

A third group of wavelengths originates at very high altitude, far above the clouds, and seems to track temperature. Bright "hot spots" could be related to auroras that were previously detected at radio wavelengths, or to upwelling of hot gas from deeper in the atmosphere.

Some of the light curves cannot be explained by either clouds or temperature, but instead show variations related to atmospheric carbon chemistry. There could be pockets of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide rotating in and out of view, or chemical reactions causing the atmosphere to change over time.

"We haven't really figured out the chemistry part of the puzzle yet," said Vos. "But these results are really exciting because they are showing us that the abundances of molecules like methane and carbon dioxide could change from place to place and over time. If we are looking at an exoplanet and can get only one measurement, we need to consider that it might not be representative of the entire planet."
